Course content

The course offers advanced analyses of trade issues and covers some economic challenges for a small open economy. New topics within international trade as well as economic geography are central in the course.

• theoretical models for different reasons for international trade
• possible connections between factor endowments and international trade
• how trade between poor and rich countries emerge, and what the consequences of such trade are
• models of new economic geography and clusters of economic activity
• conduct empirical tests of different hypothesis within international trade

Skills

You should be able to

• understand and explain different reasons of international trade
• discuss potential advantages and disadvantages of international trade
• analyze how rich and poor countries may be differently affected by international trade
• analyze what determines the location of firms and what consequences such location decisions may have on regions and countries
• develop empirical tests of different hypothesis of international trade

General competence

• You should be able to read and understand reports and research articles dealing with issues discussed in the course
• use the content of the course in your own academic work.

Learning methods and activities

4 hours of lectures every week. The course has compulsory activity. Specific requirements will be announced at the beginning of the term.

The course is an optional PhD course, and it is not taught every autumn semester. SØK8625 follows the same teaching as SØK3525. Contact the department (kontakt@econ.ntnu.no) to get access to learning resources in Blackboard.
