About the course
Course content
The course will provide students with conceptual tools for the study of signification, the production of meaning and communicative events. The analytical tools are drawn from the ethnography of communication, discourse analysis, semiotics, hermeneutics, rhetoric, the theory of tropics, narratology and speech act theory. The analytical tools will be applied to the study of everyday forms of interaction. Students will also learn to employ them in the study of political rhetoric and ideology, advertising, religious movements, and identity politics.
Learning outcome
To develop a basic analytical understanding of various forms of communication.

Lectures/seminars and written assignments (approx. 16 hours).

EXHP0001, SANT1000, SANT1001, SANT1002, SANT1003/1103 and one of the following: SANT1004-1010.
