About the course
Course content
This course offers an introduction to the basic sociological understanding of the interaction between individuals and the society. We will discuss social life and human relations in formal and informal settings, and do also look at the importance of culture in these situations. Topics such as socialization, identity formation, social behaviour, social control, group processes, social networks, social inequality, social institutions and social change are discussed. On each topic the students will be introduced to the main sociological theories in the field.
Learning outcome
To introduce the students to sociological thinking, give an overview of the main sociological concepts and theoretical perspectives, and give them a basic understanding of the interaction between individuals and the society.
Learning methods and activities
4 hours of lectures every week throughout the semester according to the lecture plan. Seminars two hours per week. The organization of the exercises will be presented at the beginning of the semester.
Form of assessment: A 5 hour written exam.
The course is normally given in the fall. If the course is offered in the spring of 2011 it will be given as the web-based courses. Contact the department for more information.
Compulsory assignments
- Approved term paper and participation on relevant seminars.
