Course content
The course provides an introduction to the study of media and mediated communication from a sociological perspective, with particular emphasis on the media organization/structure and the interaction between media and society. Newspapers, television and internet are medias that are central in this context.
Learning outcome
To provide the students with a basic understanding of central theories within the field of media sociology, as well as knowledge of the various sociological approaches applied when studying the role of media in the society. Current events in media will be discussed in light of these theories and approaches.
Learning methods and activities
Teaching method and activities: 4 hours of lectures every week throughout the semester. Two hours of group discussion every week with exercise supervision. The student must hand in a compulsory term paper.
Compulsory activities: The term paper has to be approved.
Length of the term paper: Approximately 4500 words (12 pages)
Term papers will only be approved during the spring semester.
Forms of assessment: A 5 hour written exam
