About the course

Course content

The students will be introduced to different sociological works, which will be presented and discussed in lectures and group sessions. The students will also gain experience on writing their own sociolocial texts.

Learning outcome

The purpose of the course is to train students in sociological thought and ways of working. Topics from the Norwegian and the international community will be used as examples giving the students experience in distinguishing between common sense and sociological knowledge, and to understand how sociological knowledge is created. Emphasis is placed on developing students' capacity for independent and critical analysis of social phenomena and sociological work.

Learning methods and activities

2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of group discussions per week throughout the semester. Compulsory activities: Participation (50 %) in group discussions, written assignment included.
