Course content

Both individual experiences and the wider society can be understood as consisting of a number of interconnected social processes. Based on a detailed understanding of social interaction, we analyze the evolution of various phenomena, such as social life on campus and in urban environments, local environments and other public spaces, festivals and other cultural events, volunteerism, activism and rioting, social media and much more. The course emphasizes active and creative participation of students and can also address other current phenomena. Emphasis is placed on an understanding of how social life is stabilized and categorized. The exam consists of a group-based blog and an individual oral exam.

Learning outcome

Knowledge - the student shall:

  • have insight into how the phenomena of daily life in different ways can be understood as social processes.
  • understand how these processes form the starting point for societal formation, stability and change.

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

  • analyze the events and situations in everyday life and in the "larger" society by use of the perspectives presented in the course.
  • be able to convey such an analysis using relevant concepts from sociology.

Learning methods and activities

2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of seminars every week according to the lecture plan. Attendance at 80 percent of the lectures and seminars. The compulsory activity can only be completed in the fall semester. Number and requirements will be given at the start of the semester.

Compulsory assignments

Further on evaluation

Form of assessment: Blog, which the students work on throughout the semester. The students will work in groups of 3-4 students and must publish at least 20 blog posts during the semester. The oral exam will be used to adjust the grade on the blog given in groups by a maximum of one grade. The oral exam is individual. Both the blog posts and the oral exam must be retaken at a repeat of the exam. This applies both in the case of a new evaluation after failure and by improvement of the grade.
