About the course

Course content

SOS3900 consist of the Master Thesis and mandatory participation in the Master Thesis seminar. The Master Thesis will be a scientific analysis of a sociological topic and should not exceed more than 80 pages (30000 words). Individual supervision is an important component of the Master Thesis project. It is supposed to provide the students with the skills necessary to collect and analyze data and is therefore mandatory for students handing in a Master Thesis.

Learning outcome

To prepare the students for independent research. Through mandatory supervision the students will be introduced to the various steps of a research project, learn how to evaluate others’ research in a constructive and critical manner, learn how to plan research, perform data collection, analyze data, and present research. The students will obtain skills which are useful in public services, teaching and journalism, as well as social science research.

Learning methods and activities

Mandatory Master Thesis seminar and individual supervision.

Form of assessment: Master thesis, a 30 minutes presentation of the Thesis, and an oral exam which can be used to adjust the Master thesis’ grade by one unit on the scale.

Admission to the Master's Program in Sociology.
