About the course

Course content

The Master Thesis will be a scientific analysis of a sociological topic and should not exceed more than 50 pages (19000 words). There is mandatory participation on the Master Thesis. Individual supervision is also an important component of the Master thesis project. It is supposed to provide the students with the skills necessary to collect and analyze data, and Individual supervision is therefore mandatory for students handing in a Master Thesis.

Learning outcome

To prepare the students for independent research. Through mandatory supervision the students will be introduced to the various steps of a research project, learn how to evaluate others’ research in a constructive and critical manner, learn how to plan research, perform data collection, analyze data, and present research. The students will obtain skills which are useful in public services, teaching and journalism, as well as social science research.

Learning methods and activities

Mandatory Master Thesis seminar and individual supervision. Form of assessment: Master Thesis and an oral exam which can be used to adjust the Master Thesis’ grade by one unit on the scale. The thesis must be handed in within 20 weeks. Please contact the departement for further information.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Sosiologi (MSOS)

Required previous knowledge

Admission to the Master's Programme in Sociology or the 5-year Teacher Education in Social Science.
