About the course

Course content

The theory seminar offers a specialization in relevant sociological theory and important authorships concerning the use of theories in concrete analyses. Special focus will be put on using sociological theory as a tool for understanding contemporary society and the issues that are important to us today. The seminar also aims to train the candidates in critical reflection of the meaning and use of theory.

Learning outcome

Show how modern sociological theories can be used to analyse current issues.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and seminars. The essay is to be an independent discussion of a topic taught in lectures, and is to consist of 20 pages.


If 6 or fewer students sign up for a planned course during the first 2 teaching weeks, the course will be offered as an instructed reading course.

Required previous knowledge

Master’s degree in Sociology or equivalent
