About the course

Course content

The course gives an introduction to Spanish and Latin American literature from the 20th and 21st century. It gives a general view of the most important writers and representative texts in various genres from various literary eras. The course also gives a brief introduction to important methods of literary analysis.

Learning outcome

The course gives the students a fundamental understanding of texts and culture that enables the students to analyze different types of literary expressions. Students will learn how to place a selection of writers and texts in their correct literary context, consider the appropriate analytical method for each particular text and do a close reading of the text. Furthermore, the students should further develop their language proficiency and be able to communicate their knowledge about literature in correct Spanish, both written and oral.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and group sessions. The course involves a high degree of student activity, both through preparations at home and oral participation in lectures and group sessions.

Compulsory assignments

  • 1 oral presentation, approx. 10 min.

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to the one-year programme in Spanish or the bachelor's programme in European Studies and Foreign Languages (Spanish).

Course materials

A selection of texts from various genres that are considered representative of Spanish literature. The reading list will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
