Course content
The course provides an overview of the relevant genres/text types used in oral and written communication in engineering disciplines. Emphasis is placed on communication of professional knowledge to various types of target audiences. The subject is taught only in English, but is not an English course. The subject provides an introduction to, and practical training in various forms of communication of professional knowledge in English.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
The student:
- understands how writing contributes to scientific development in society, in scientific institutions, and in the individual
- has a basic knowledge of various forms and purposes of communication of technical knowledge in English
- understands the relationship between written texts and disciplinary conventions and practices
- has knowledge of the practices and techniques that promote scientific communication, both in academic and non-academic environments
Skills
The student:
- is able to analyze and write different types of texts, for example scientific research articles, review articles, popular science articles, project papers and master theses
- is able to identify characteristics in a text that create coherence
- is able to present disciplinary knowledge both orally and in writing to peers in the discipline as well as non-academics
- is able to develop a text alone and in collaboration with others, and can give and make use of response to texts as they are being developed
- has practice in making use of the possibilities and managing the hurdles in professional communication in English
Learning methods and activities
Teaching consists of lectures, exercises in groups, written assignments and oral presentations, as well as weekly e-logs. The assignments are based on the studies / projects in the students` respective areas. The compulsory activities include 4 oral presentations, four written assignments and 6 e-logs. All mandatory activities must be approved before the student may take the exam.

Further on evaluation
The final assessment for the course is a portfolio assessment. The portfolio consists of one of the oral presentations and one of the written assignments carried out during the semester. Both the oral presentation and the written assignment must be passed to pass the course.
