Course content

Academic writing is an integral part of an academic education. The course will cover the basic structures of term papers and other types of academic writing, with focus on establishing the rationale and purpose of an academic paper. Since academic writing is dependent on the research of others, the course will emphasize the importance of finding, evaluating and referring to relevant literature. Reference is a key issue here. In addition, the course will provide students with writing and language techniques that are useful in writing a clear, coherent, logical text.

Learning outcome

Academic writing is an integral part of an academic education. The purpose of this academic writing course is to introduce students to the main types of academic writing they will be expected to use while they are students at NTNU, and thereby increase their level of academic proficiency.

Learning methods and activities

The course will be taught as a combination of lectures and group sessions.

Students are divided into groups based on their previous knowledge in academic writing: beginners level or advanced level.

The final paper will be based on the four required written assignments that the students submit during the semester.

In addition to the required assignments, students are to write and submit at least 8 e-logs (short, weekly e-mails) during the course of the semester.

Deadlines for submisson will be announced by the course instructor.

Failing one part of the exam entails failing the whole course. Students who fail must complete and submit a new set of required assignments and final paper.

Recommended previous knowledge

Students who take the course should be proficient in both oral and written English.

Required previous knowledge

The course is intended for exchange students at bachelor's level at the Faculty of Humanities or Faculty of Social Sciences and Technology Management. The course has restricted admission.
