Statistics with Applications
About
About the course
Course content
Descriptive statistics. Probability theory, calculation with probability, conditional probability and independence. Random variables, discrete and continuous probability distributions, expected value, variance, bivariate probability distributions, covariance, correlation and double expectation. A little about simple linear regression.
Learning outcome
This course will give the students basic knowledge in probablity theory and statistical inference. Focus is on relating the theory to practical problems. Practical understanding of the models leading to the most well known probability distributions will be emphasized. The course will also give the students the theoretical background required to take the next course TMA4255 Applied statistics.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and compulsory exercises. Written final examination is the basis for the grade awarded in the course.
Compulsory assignments

Recommended previous knowledge
R1 or 2 MX from grammar school or equivalent. It is recommended also to have MA0001 Mathematical Methods A and MA0002 Mathematical methods B or equivalent (may be taken as a parallel).
Course materials
Will be announced at the start of the course.
