About the course
Course content
This course offers an introduction to the history of the language, its people and their culture from the pre-Bantu period to today. The influence of Arabs, Europeans and others will be examined. The course also offers an elementary overview of Swahili literature. SWA1102 can be taken independently of SWA1101 and SWA1111, as an independent course in connection with other courses such as history, social anthropology and science of religion.
Learning outcome
The goal of the course is to familiarize students with Swahili history, civilization, culture and societal systems, so they can understand the intricate relationships that exist within Swahili societies on the coast and on the mainland and their influence on the Swahili people.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures.
Assessment: A 2-week take-home exam. Number of pages for the take-home exam will usually be between 10 and 20 typed pages (line spacing 1.5), partly depending on the subject.
