Course - Geotechnics, Field and Laboratory Investigations - TBA4110
Geotechnics, Field and Laboratory Investigations
About
About the course
Course content
By doing experiments, the student shall learn techniques used for field sounding and soil sampling and methods for laboratory testing.
The course contains planning of site investigations, classification and index testing of soils, theory for determination of mechanical properties, strength, stiffness and permeability and also effects of sample disturbance. Included is also practical instrumentation of a field or a model test. The course also contains interpretation of results and principles for determination of design parameters.
Learning outcome
The course shall provide a comprehensive knowledge of the mechanical properties of soils, both concerning the theoretical background, as well as field and laboratory methods for determination and interpretation of the soil parameters.
Learning methods and activities
The course is based on lectures, practical exercises in the field and laboratory as a part of a site investigation project. Colloquia with presentation and discussion of test data. The practical exercises and project work are carried out as group work with 2 - 3 students per group. The students project work must be approved for the student to be allowed access to the final written exam. The lectures and exercises are in English. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
Compulsory assignments
- Project work
Recommended previous knowledge
The course is based on TBA4100 Geotechnics and Geology and TBA4105 Geotechnics, Design Methods.
