Course content

The design process is the basis for an optimal construction process and an end-product according to the requirements of the client and the society.
The course shall give an introduction to design management, decision making, coordination and planning related to requirements from the site, the production, clients and public authorities. Available "tools", concept options and optimisation of costs and technology will be treated. Design management related to various contract types will be a main topic. The course will be partly based on cases. The course will go in parallel with AAR4951 Design Management at Department of Architectural Design and Management.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
The candidate should have knowledge of:
- The building design process and its place in the overall construction process.
- What the design processes products are and what constitutes value in them
- The various actors involved and their roles and responsibilities
- Different implementation models for construction projects and the implications for the design.
- The building design process as a production system and management of it
- The complexity of modern building projects and the need for interdisciplinarity and interface management
- Management of the building design process.

Skills
The candidate should be able to:
- Apply the knowledge in a real life building design processes.

General knowledge
The candidate must:
- Understand the importance of professional management of the design process.
- Understand the importance of framework factors such as cost, time and quality.
- Understand the design process’ impact in relation to the building‘s suitability for its purpose.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises and hands-on examples in cooperation with representatives from the construction industry in Norway. The exercises will be related to current projects. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
