Course content

This course comprises advanced subjects within 1) building physics and 2) material technology.
The building physics part includes building physical design, especially in regard to simulation programs for heat-, moisture- and air transport, inclusive some background theory. Practical use of some simulation programs are a part of the course. In addition practical building physics in regard to the build-up and design of the building envelope are included, especially in regard to avoiding moisture damages.
Climatic stresses on building materials and assemblies. Degradation and ageing of important building materials. Methods for characterizing durability and service life in practice.
Topics from recent research in building physics and material science will be included.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
The students shall have an in-depth understanding about simulations of building physical processes, and about practical building physics/building technology, especially in regard to the building envelope. They shall also have obtained in-depth knowledge about degradation and ageing of building materials.

Skills:
The students shall be able to use tools for simulation of heat- and moisture transport in buildings. They shall be able to outline the design of the building envelope in regard to avoiding moisture problems, and to have general knowledge about physical design of buildings. The students shall also be able to assess the material use in buildings from the view of degradation and ageing of building materials.

General competence:
The students shall have an overview of the choices in regard to building physics and material technology that are necessary in the building design. The students shall learn to read scientific articles, and thereby orientate themself regarding the relevant research front.

Learning methods and activities

The teaching will be given as lectures and seminars. Some mandatory exersices are included, and these have to be approved before access to the exam.
