Course content

The course comprise the following topics: Fire as a risk to society and individuals. Fire safety regulations. Laws, codes and guidelines. Fire physics - this comprise chemical and physical conditions, heat transfer, development and spread of fire and smoke. Materials reaction to fire. Fire load and characterization of fires. Fire response of materials, structures, installations and people. Fire testing and classification of materials and components. Measures to prevent and reduce fire damages. Active and passive fire protection. Fire safety engineering.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
The students shall have knowledge about fire risk, fire technology and fire safety engineering.

Skill:
Calculate fire load, resistance to fire and perform risk analyses of fire in buildings.

General knowledge:
Foundation for performing simple fire safety engineering of buildings.
Needed: Materials reaction to fire; fire resistance of constructions; understanding of fire development and response.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, compulsory exercises. The lectures and exercises are given in English when students who do not speak Norwegian follow the course. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
