Course content

Geometric design and speed optimisation, vehicle and track dynamics, vehicle ride comfort, track irregularities and damage mechanisms, derailment safety, structural design, interaction between rolling stock and track, risk and reliability.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
- traffic loading estimates and structural analysis for track superstructure
- interaction between rolling stock and the track
- new developments of tracks for high speed train
- the dynamic properties of track components.

Skills:
- perform geometric design of track alignment by use of computer tools such as NovaPoint software
- make speed calculations on the basis of track geometry and train parameters
- design the track superstructure and select appropriate track components
- select proper ballast material and ballast gradation.

General competence:
- the principles for geometric design of railway tracks
- understand the railway system at the different levels and appreciate the different professional skills needed
- good judgment of track superstructure layer thickness and components material selection
- design the track alignment using computer tools.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures organized in a series of seminars by several teachers combined with individual and group exercises. Students will get seminar topics individual/group of two.

Knowledge equivalent to TBA4225 is a mandatory requirement.
