Course content

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from a technical point of view. Spatial data models, topology, network operations, cartographic generalization, information theory and other elements that are behind a GIS.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
The student is supposed to have knowledge about
- Basic concepts for handling geographic information
- How to use Fuzzy Sets in connection with geographic information
- How to organize topological connections between geographic objects
- Technology for the portrayal of geographic information on the Internet
- Data structures for the representation of geographic information in various dimensions
- Important algorithms used in geographic information systems (GIS)
- Information theory and cartographic communication
- Standardization of geographic information as wll as how GIS may be implemented in an organization
- Techniques for cartographic animations
- 3D GIS and network analysis
- Quality and uncertainty in geographic information.

Skills
The student is supposed to know how to:
- Choose the suitable data structure and use it for geographic objects
- Implement a map application (Web, pad, mobile unit) where elements from the discussed technology are used
- Make a map application that have 2-way interaction with a data base
- Make a map application, within a given theme, which has a carefully considered and good user interface
- Make a map application where the cartographic content is communicated in a good way and in accordance with the theory.

General competence
The student is supposed to know how to:
- Handling geographic data in a computer
- Give a well considered presentation of geographic information in an electronic media.

Learning methods and activities

A project during the semester counts 50%. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
