Course content
The basis for evaluation and analysis of traffic safety and risk related to design abd regulation of the road and street network, and how this network is applied by different user groups.
Main course elements are:
- Traffic safety (TS),
- Accidents, accident cost, road user behaviour and risk.
- Effects of TS measures.
- Before-and-after studies.
- TS audits and inspections.
- Black spot analysis.
- Challenges related to road and street design for pedestrians and cyclists.
- In-depth accident studies and risk analysis.
- Methods for risk evaluation in principal and detailed planning of the road system.
- Risk management in Public Roads Administrations and other transport agencies.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
Knowledge of
- Traffic safety (TS) and risks of road transport,
- TS-work in Norway and elements of such work in other countries,
- Data sources and empirical knowledge of accidents,
- How different types of measures influence on risks and behaviour of road users,
- TS-audits and risk analysis applied in TS planning.
Skills:
- Carry out black spot analysis and statistical before-and-after studies of the influence of TS measures on risk level and road user behaviour,
- Apply and understand program tools for TS effect analysis, and Planning of HAZID risk analyses.
General competence:
- Understanding of how traffic management measures and road design influence on road user behaviour,
- To carry out TS analyses in team work, and
- To present results and professional judgements in a clear and understandable way.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, individual and group exercises, partly as field studies. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course.
Further on evaluation
Written exam makes up 100% of the basis for the grade (A-F). In addition there are three mandatory assignments with pass/fail that has to be passed. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
Course materials
Lecture notes and reports, including road and street design guidelines. Textbook in Risk Analysis.
