Course content

Strategies to achieve sustainable transport: Improved public transport, restrictions on car traffic, technology for lower emissions, freight transport that is more environmentally friendly. Analysis of how the transport system can serve vulnerable groups in a better way. Engineering interventions in the urban transport system to improve the speed of buses; ITS and environmental consequences of transport; regulation and other action in the transport system to protect the environment, decrease energy consumption, and counteract climate change. In addition, some topical themes from current sustainable transport policy and research will be dealt with.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
The candidate should have knowledge of:
- Sustainability problems caused by transport of persons and goods
- Strategies to achieve a more sustainable transport sector, emphasising public transport
- Traffic engineering measures to reduce congestion and environmental deterioration

Skills
The candidate is able to:
- Use software tools for analysing the environmental effects of different driving patterns
- Estimate the effects of engineering measures and other policies for promoting sustainable mobility

General competence
The candidate can:
- Comprehend and present results from international research on transport and environmental issues
- Reflect on the consequences of sustainability goals for the transport sector
- Orientate themselves in the international discourse of this field and identify relevant literature for their own studies.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, group work, seminars, and exercises. The lectures and exercises are in English when non-Norwegian speaking students follow the subject. Written examination might be changed to oral examination in case of re-sit.
