Course - Increased Value of Marine Biological Resources - TBT4155
Increased Value of Marine Biological Resources
About
About the course
Course content
The introduction of the course will describe the actual potential that can be exploited when it comes to increasing the value of marine resources in Norway, followed by an introduction of the sea as a special environment for biological production, the biochemical basis for this production, and the natural product chemistry for a selected group of molecules. With fish as a raw material, focus will be placed on chemical composition and quality (including biological and biochemical processes that are induced after catch). Particular groups of marine macromolecules with special physical and/or biological properties (i.e. gel- and viscosity inducing molecules) with focus on chemical composition and sequence as well as qualities of materials based on these compounds will also be presented. Present and future application of these molecules will be given.
Learning outcome
The student will learn about the background of marine biological resources in Norway and how this presently gives, and can give, a basis for an increase in value of these resources.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures. In case of few registered students, lectures may be changed to self-tuition. Basic laboratory exercises and demonstrations. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
Recommended previous knowledge
None.
Course materials
Will be given at the beginning of the course.
