Course content

Information retrieval in textual document collections. Search engines. Linguistic and statistical techniques for text mining. Text categorization, clustering, collocations, and concept extraction. Ontologies in knowledge management. Semantic applications. Semantic web.

Learning outcome

Kunnskaper: Basic techniques for information retrieval and text mining, as well as semantic languages for knowledge representation. The students get insight into how documents' textual content can be analyzed semantically with respect to retrieval, categorization, concept learning and knowledge management. Some issues related to documents and services on the Web will also be discusses.

Skills: Ability to develop and use applications for information retrieval and text mining. Ability to develop information systems that make use of semantic technologies.

General competence: Students will learn how textual documents in enterprises and on the Web are used to management knowledge.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and exercises. The course may be taught in English if taken by students without Norwegian language skills. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes a final written test (75%) and exercises (25%). The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may change from written to oral.
