Course - Electrooptics and Lasers - TFE4160
Electrooptics and Lasers
About
About the course
Course content
(I) Electrooptics: Waves in isotropic and anisotropic media, dispersion and absorption. Polarization, reflection, refraction, Jones formalism, optical activity, Faraday effect. Interference and coherence. Fourier optics and gaussian beams. (II) Lasers: Optical cavities. Amplifier media. Amplification saturation and hole burning. Pulsed lasers, Q switching, cavity dumping and mode locking.
Learning outcome
The course will give an introduction to fundamental problems in electrooptics. In addition an understanding will be given of how different lasers function.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, tutorials, laboratory exercises and mid-term exam. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. The course may be held in English.
