Course - Solid State Materials and Nanostructures - TFE4215
Solid State Materials and Nanostructures
Lessons are not given in the academic year 2010/2011
About
About the course
Course content
Introduction to quantum mechanics, crystal structure, reciprocal lattice, Brillouin zones, phonons, free electron gas, electrons in a periodic lattice, energy band model, semiconductors, optical properties, excitons, di- and ferro-electrics, dia- and para-magnetism, ferro- and antiferro-magnetism, solid state materials in reduced dimensions, nanostructures.
Learning outcome
The goal of the course is to give the students a basic knowledge of solid state materials with a special emphasis of their geometric, electronic, optical and magnetic properties. With this knowledge an understanding of solid state materials static and dynamical properties will be achieved for further use when analyzing such materials in reduced dimensions.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, compulsory exercises and mid-semester examination. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade awarded in the course. This portfolio comprises a written final examination 80% and the semester assignment 20%. The mid-semester examination only counts if it has a positive effect on the total assessment. The results for the constituent parts are to be given in %-points, while the grade for the whole portfolio (course grade) is given by the letter grading system. 2/3 of the exercises have to be passed before the written exam. Retake of examination may be given as an oral examination. The course may be held in English.
