About the course

Course content

Nonlinear dispersive wave equations in hydrodynamics and physics. Solitary waves and solitons. Soliton solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation. Nonlinear oscillations. Phase portrait. Poincare maps, iterations. Bifurcations, period doubling, scaling, universality. Deterministic chaos. Physical examples.

Learning outcome

Presentation of interesting phenomena occurring in nonlinear dynamical systems, with physical examples.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, problem sessions and computing exercises. A re-sit examination may be changed from written to oral.
