Course - Mineralogy and Petrography - TGB4125
Mineralogy and Petrography
About
About the course
Course content
The mineralogy part involves crystallography, mineral chemistry, simple phase relations. The more limited petrography course includes the classification of igneous, sedimentary and magmatic rocks. The practicals consist of an introduction to mineral identification by optical microscopy (2Ø) and the study of crystal models and samples of minerals and rocks.
Learning outcome
The course will provide theoretical and practical skills in crystallography, mineralogy (about 50 important minerals and mineral groups), optical mineralogy and petrography (all important rock types).
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and practicals. The course evaluation is based on practical tests (40%) and final exam (60%). If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
