Structural Geology, Basic Course
About
About the course
Course content
Description, classification and interpretation of geological structures such as faults, folds, foliations, lineations etc. and the relationships between such structures and tectonic phenomena like mountain building and basin formation. Structures related to intrusive rocks, gravity controlled deformation and salt tectonics. Practicals consist of the visualisation and calculation of folded, faulted and rotated rock units, especially how these appear on geological maps and cross sections. Extensive use is made of the stereographic projection.
Learning outcome
Introduction to structural geology, i.e. the study of rock reactions to mechanical influences under varying conditions.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and obligatory exercises. 1 week's obligatory field mapping course (will be held medio June). Exercise tests and field report count for up to 40 % of the final exam. The re-sit exam can be oral.
