Course - Sedimentology and Stratigraphy - TGB4165
Sedimentology and Stratigraphy
About
About the course
Course content
Transport and deposition of sediments. Sedimentary textures and structures. Depositional environments and facies. Stratigraphy and stratigraphical principles with emphasis on sequence stratigraphy. Practicals consist of the microscopy of sedimentary rocks, interpretation of sedimentary structures, description and interpretation of sedimentary facies in cores, interpretation of graphic sedimentary logs.
Learning outcome
To give an understanding of the processes which lead to transport and deposition of sediments and sedimentary rocks and how these can be placed in time and room. Further to give the students skills in describing and interpret sedimentary facies.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and exercises. 1 week obligatory field course. The field course report counts for 30% of the final evaluation. At postponed exam (continuation exam) written exam may be changed to oral exam.
Compulsory assignments
- Exercises, field course
Recommended previous knowledge
Knowledge equivalent to TGB4100 Geology, Introductury Course and TGB4125 Mineralogy and Petrography.
