About
About the course
Course content
Material properties of rocks, rock masses and soils. Jointing of rocks. Weakness zones and gouge materials. Stresses in rock masses. Engineering geological investigations. Design of underground structures. Classification of rock masses. Stability problems and support measures for tunnels, underground openings and slopes. Geological processes with emphasis on erosion, transport and sedimentation from glaciers and glacial rivers. Age, sedimentation story, distribution, normal stratigraphy, structure and mineralogical composition of soils. Weathering processes and stability. Use of soil and rock masses for construction purposes.
Learning outcome
To give the students fundamental introduction to engineering geological methods for planning and building of sites in and on rocks together with fundamental knowledge of the engineering geological properties, distribution and sedimentation story of the norwegian rock masses, soils.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, excursions and demontrations in laboratory. Obligatoric tutorials including classification of soils and rocks, use of air photos and geological maps, engineering geological problems related to design and stability. 4 days obligatoric field course for Geofag-students. The exam can be changed from written to oral at the postponed exams (continuation exam).
