Course content
The course builds from the principles of sustainable development, UN Global Compact, Green Economy initiatives including GEO5, IPCC and IPBES, DPSIR-system, Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI) and national and international environmental regulation and policy. From this point, the course develops further insight into how environmental requirements from customers, authorities and other stakeholders in industrial networks and society impact the organizations situation regarding competitiveness in a life cycle perspective. This leads to topics including corporate governance, environmental management, Corporate Social Responsibility, legislation, and international standards like ISO 26000 and ISO-14000 standards. Special attention is given to tools for environmental management like environmental analyses, LCA, environmental accounting, performance indicators, product eco-labeling, business environmental and sustainability reporting and auditing methodology. The system perspective is fundamental for the understanding of the interactions between the companies and the society wherein they operate.
Learning outcome
The course shall give knowledge, understanding and skills to support the endeavours for sustainability, better environmental management and industrial practice under the vision of sustainable development and corporate social responsibility. The subject shall give understanding of ethical dilemmas and show connections between environmental and social responsibility in global value chains.
The course is organized in four blocks with the following objectives:
Block 1 shall give knowledge and understanding on:
- the regulatory and policy frameworks and other sources of guidance for companies,
- principles and tools such as DPSIR and stakeholder analysis
- why environmental management has become an important issue in business today
- how to use the national and international frameworks to establish sustainability strategies in business and other organizations
- system structures and the interactions of different stakeholders from a business perspective.
Block 2 shall give knowledge on:
- the principles and practices related to EMS and the structures of the family of ISO standards that define EMS,
- specific tools for life cycle environmental assessment of products
- the principles related to communication of environmental performances of processes, products and services
- auditing principles and requirements for environmental management certificates and product declarations
- green public procurement as a driver for corporate environmental strategies.
Block 3 shall give knowledge on:
- the principles and practices related to corporate governance,
- concepts relevant to how companies manage their employees, their investors, their networks, their relationships in society, and other stakeholders
- CSR-governance models and codes of conducts.
Block 4 shall give knowledge on:
- trends in both EMS and corporate governance,
- how to balance business goals with sustainability.
A central part of the course is the project work where students work in groups with a case company. This shall give students skills in:
- corporate handling of health, environment and safety issue,
- the creation and monitoring of performance indicators on a corporate level
- working with implementation of environmental management systems in practice
- how to encourage CSR-strategies in a company
- critical reflections of current practices in corporate case studies
- presentation of business performances
- team work on corporate environmental issues
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and group-based student activities using lecturer presentations and project work / field work connected to a company. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes a final written exam (60%) and project (40%). The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. Postponed/repeated exams may be oral.

Recommended previous knowledge
The course is compulsory for students in the 2-year master program of Safety, Health and Environment and in the 2-year master program in Global Production Management, and can be selected by students in the 2-year master program in Industrial Ecology
