About the course

Course content

The subject comprises ecology including ecosystem (structure, function and types), species, population, community and biomes (global ecosystems), biodiversity, biogeochemical cycles, soil, and impact on ecosystems from human activities (climate change, pollution, acidification, hazardous chemicals, land use, changes in land use and biodiversity) and env risk. Global and national env monitoring, status, politics and sustainability reporting. Assessment of ecosystems capacity to serve human needs, and as basis for industrial production and value adding in a sustainability perspective Cfr. Millennium Ecosystem Assessment 2005 and Environmental Performance Index 2006).

Learning outcome

The subject shall give the theoretical and practical basis for combining ecological knowledge with human use of nature and natural resources to support the endeavours for securing peoples well being and security, and the ecosystems capacity and quality. The subject shall give knowledge about international env status and politics, and by using environmental reports and sustainability indexes shall the student be trained in discussing env issues and using such documents and instruments in the work for environmental improvement within business and enterprises. The subject is adjusted to the Industrial Ecology Study Programme.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and group based student work like writting essays, exercise and presentations. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes a final written exam (60%) and exercises (40%). The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may change from written to oral.
