About

About the course

Course content

The course goes deeper into organic chemistry methods and reaction mechanisms, with special emphasis on the chemistry of carbonyl compounds, aromatic compounds, and pericyclic reactions. Reactions involving carbocations, carbenes and radicals as reactive intermediates will also be covered, and an introduction to photochemistry will be given.

Learning outcome

The course should enable the student to understand and compose organic chemical synthesis, and make rational assumption on reagent and solvent selections for various transformations. Most reactions should be explained by reaction mechanisms. One should understand how different functional groups affect the reactivity of a molecule. The main topics are chemistry of carbonyl groups, aromatic substitutions, reactions over electron deficient intermediates, pericyclic reactions.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and exercises. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
