Structural Design, Specialization Course
New from the academic year 2010/2011
About
About the course
Course content
Methodology for the determination of loads and material properties in design of civil engineering structures. Environmental and accidental loads, earthquake loads, load combinations and design by testing. Loads on bridges, calculation of capacities and deformations during construction and in as-built situation. Examples from cantilever-construction bridges, suspension- and cable stayed bridges. Capacity and stiffness of bolted and welded joints in steel structures. Correspondence between joint- and structural models in analyses and design of the executed structure. Composite structures. Structural systems based on elements, bracing systems.
Learning outcome
The students should after this course be able to handle complexe structural design problems. The course gives operational understanding of loads and responce for advanced structural design. Given structural examples will be used to highlight different structural aspects, such as bridges, member joints and building systems.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and exerecises. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. The lectures and exercises are in english when students who do not speak Norwegian follow the course. In case of continuation exams, these will be arranged before the end of the same exam period.
