About the course

Course content

Euclidean algorithm, elementary theory of prime numbers. Fermate theorem and Eulers's generalization. Elementary group theory, permutations, cyclic groups, Lagranges theorem and cosets, the fundamental theorem of finitely generalized abelian groups, group actions and combinatorics. Rings, polynorimal rings, ideals, quotient rings, fields, and the structure theorem for finite fields and their group of units.

Learning outcome

The objective of this course is to introduce the students to a systematic algebraic way of thinking and make them acquianted with the fundamental notions of elementary number theory and algebra with modern applications in mind.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and exercises. Retake of examination may be given as an oral examination.
