Materials Technology
About
About the course
Course content
Engineering materials and their properties, price and availability. Elastic and plastic properties quantified by E-modulus, yield, ultimate strength, ductility and fracture toughness. Elastic deformation, plastic collapse, fast fracture. Fatigue and creep in simple structures. Corrosion and corrosion protection. Engineering properties of steel and aluminium, polymers and composites explained in terms of their stucture.
Learning outcome
The course should give the students basic knowledge of metals, polymers and composites and demonstrate their use in construction. Emphasis is on material properties as function of their structure.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, calculation and laboratory excercises. Students will collaborate in small groups on realistic applications of materials adapted to their course of study. This work will be evaluated and account for 20% of the final grade. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
Compulsory assignments
- Exercises, group projects
