Analysis and Assessment Based on the Finite Element Method, Basic Course
About
About the course
Course content
Dimensioning criteria. Theory for fatigue analysis. Idealising of mechanical components. Boundary conditions. Elementary analysis of circular plats and cylinder shell. Element and system matrices for FE beams and plates. Compatible and non-compatible finite elements. Element requirements. Convergerce. Error estimate. Numerical integration. Isoparametric elements. Consistent load. Vibration. Heat transfer. Project assignment (weight 1/3): Modelling and analysis of mechanical products on the computer. Analysis result evaluation.
Learning outcome
Introduction to dimensioning of mechanical designs. The main focus is put on analysis using the Finite Element method for analysis of temperatures-, deformations-, stresses- and vibration problems including assessment of analysis results with respect to strength and durability.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, calculating problems, work in teams using FE-programs. Project teams are established at the beginning of the semester. To be allowed to take the examination requires that the project work is accepted. The project is graded and counts 1/3 of the final grade. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
Compulsory assignments
- Project
Recommended previous knowledge
This subject is based on the fundamental mechanical engineering courses in engineering design and manufacturing, strength of materials, dynamics and machine elements tough for the mechanical engineering students.
