About

About the course

Course content

The basic focus is to quantify important material properties, like plasticity, deformation- and strengthening mechanisms, fatigue and fracture, by means of mechanics. The development and optimalisation of products are explanined on the basis of the mechanics of materials. The theories are applied on two Cases, where also the training in teamwork is an important aspect in addition to the scientific exercise. Three important groups of materials are presented, aluminium, steel and stainless steel. The aim is partly to apply the theoretical models and partly to present practical industrial-related knowledge on these groups of materials.

Learning outcome

Develop a quantitative understanding of important material properties: 1)plasticity, 2)deformation- and strengthening mechanisms, 3)fatigue and fracture, and communicate knowledge of industrial alloys made of 1)aluminium, 2)stainless steel and 3)structural steel.

Learning methods and activities

The teaching is based upon lectures, exercises and team work. The students work in teams on three cases, and 40% of the final grade is based on the achievements from these cases. Laboratory exercises are included in the cases. The first case is introduced the first week of the semester, and the students are kindly asked to show up the first week. Information is published on the home-page: http://www.immtek.ntnu.no/und/fag/TMM4140/. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
