Course content

Welding: Physical basis of arc welding. Arc welding methods. Solid state welding. Laser and electron beam welding. Automation. Thermal cutting. Heat distribution in the work piece. Stresses and deformation. Design with welding. Welding metallurgy. Welding defects and fracture. Cost of welding production. Non-destructive testing. Brazing/soldering: methods and properties. Adhesive bonding: methods and properties.

Learning outcome

The course should give a basic introduction to welding, brazing/soldering and adhesive bonding as important methods of production and how they affect properties of materials and products. Emphasis is on welding.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and video. Voluntary calculation and descriptive excercises. Compulsory laboratory will be scheduled. The lectures and exercises are in English when students who do not speak Norwegian take the course. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
