About

About the course

Course content

The course gives a general description of the maritime industry, with emphasis on introducing key concepts as well as roles of key actors in the industry. The main focus will be on shipbuilding, but the course is designed so as to have relevans for the building of other marine structures.
A description is provided of the build-project and –process, where one main aspect is to describe the relationships between the different key processes like sales, design, engineering, procurement & materials management and production.
Adaptation of the design and technical solutions with respect to the total costs (in particular procurement and production) in the build project will be discussed. Factors that may reduce the work efforts (hours spent) will be highlighted.
The subject also puts particular effort into building knowledge on efficient build methods, focussed on ships and structures of high complexity. Efficient outfitting, as well as zone-oriented shipbuilding and modularisation is stressed. The feedback from production to design is discussed. Organisation of facilities and processes for improved efficiency will also be treated.

Learning outcome

The main objective is to teach the common knowledge of marine building technology and focus on factors which are important to the cometitiveness.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, excursion (if feasible) and projects. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes a final written exam (70%) and projects (30%). The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. Postponed/repeated exams may be oral.
