About
About the course
Course content
Outline of the design process for displacement vessels: Main dimensions, weight, volumes, and cost on the basis of specified capacity and speed. Definition section area curve, lines sketch, subdivision, and control of stability, freeboard and floodable length. Stability accidents. Properties for semi submersibles. Application computer programs in design and stability calculations. The aspects of the design process in greater depth. Short introduction to logistics for design abd operation. Project evaluation / economic criteria.
LAB Demo. Compulsory project regarding design/operation of a semi submersible platform or ship.
Learning outcome
The subject will give the students an introduction to preliminary design and operation of displacement vessels.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, exercises and project assignments. Understanding and ability to perform realistic marine systems design projects. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes a written exam (70%) and exercises (30%). The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. Postponed/repeated exams may be oral.
