About the course

Course content

The course is given every year. The gives an introduction to the practical application of the theory of light metals production, with emphasis on aluminium electrolysis. The main topics are: Energy balance and thermochemistry, bath chemistry, additives and physico-chemical properties of bath, alumina, its properties, solubility in the bath, and alumina feeding, current efficiency and energy consumption, magnetic fields,operation of industrial cells, process control, practical improvements of the process in the past, present and in the future.

Learning outcome

Basic understanding of the principles for aluminium production and their industrial application.

Learning methods and activities

Voluntary exercises. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
