Course content

Logistical operations in the supply chain systems: This contains theoretical aspects of supply chain management as well as major characteristics of the supply chain as product, customer/market, deliveries and distribution, production, replenishment, ICT, planning and forecasting. Methods for mapping, analyzing, simulation and operation research will be applied for supply chain design and allocation of resources, localisation of manufacturing, inventory and distribution and environment- and cost considerations.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
- Profound and specialized knowledge about modern management of logistic operations in the supply chain of manufacturing and trading enterprises, with emphasis on management and design, ICT, and decision support.
- Thorough understanding of the supply chain system, its components and processes, utilization of ICT and the establishment, management and improvement of supply chains.
- Understanding and application of relevant models, analytical tools and methods.
- Insight into what constitute core technologies within the respective processes.
- Training in scientific solution of industrial problems and report-writing.

Skills:
- Ability to apply acquired knowledge for developing holistic solutions within management of industrial supply chains and identify opportunities for innovation.
- Ability to transform theories to practical application based on well-founded choices of relevant alternative solutions.
- Critically and independently evaluate analytical tools, methods, technical models and solutions.
- Carry out an independent and technical engineering research or development project under supervision.

General competence (attitudes):
- Understand the role of logistics in a broader societal perspective.
- Cooperate and contribute to multidisciplinary interaction.
- Communicate technical logistic problems and solutions.

Learning methods and activities

The teaching is given in English and the Examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments. The main learning model consist of the following elements: Ordinary lecturers, guest lectureres and industry visit, exercises consisting of case examples, simulation and supply chain management game, an industrial assignment. The written excame counts for 60% and the assignment for 40% of the final grade. 5 out of 8 exercises must be approved and the assignement handed in before the exam. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. 2-3 guest lectures from relevant industrial companies.
