About the course

Course content

The course covers refraction and scattering of simple geometrical bodies, particles and bubbles. Diffraction and scattering of finite plates with even and rough surfaces. Furthermore, the course treats acoustic and elastic waves in solid media and waves in layered media. Particular emphasis is given to acoustics of marine sediment and porous media based on the Biot theory. Elements of non linear acoustics and the design of parametric sound sources are discussed. Finally, some of the more common methods for measurement and characterization of sea bottom properties are presented and discussed.

Learning outcome

The objective of the course is to give a deeper and more theoretical treatment of some central issues and problems relevant for marine acoustics.

Learning methods and activities

Lecture, colloquium, project work and computer assignments.

Required previous knowledge

Background in mathematics, physics and signal processing on level comparable with that given in course TTT4175 Marine Acoustics.
