Course content
Real-time theory: Schedulers and synchronisation, the state machine formalism. PLC (Programmable logic Controllers).
System analysis and design using UML, with emphasis on event and time driven systems.
The C programming language: Pointers and complex data structures (arrays and structs). Register-Level operations, bits in input and output registers, program development based on C.
Numeral systems, sampling, D/A and A/D converters.
Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), noise and noise subjugation.
Transmission lines and line termination.
Communication networks and protocols, serial communication, field buses.
Measurement principles based on resistance, capacitance, light, magnetism etc.. Measurement principles and instruments for selected physical process variables.
Learning outcome
The course shall provide basic and practical knowledge about and experience in the development of computer systems connected to physical equipment for measurement and control.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, laboratory work including practical project and computer exercises, obligatory excursion.
Portfolio evaluation is the basis for the final grade. Parts of the portfolio are final exam in writing 70% and exercise and laboratory work 30%. The result for each part is given in percentage units, while evaluation of the entire portfolio (the final grade) is given as a letter. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may change from written to oral.

Recommended previous knowledge
General basic IT knowledge and some elementary programming knowledge and skill. Basic understandig of analog and digital electronic circuits as well as the structure and function of computers.
Required previous knowledge
TDT4110 Information Technology, Introduction, or equivalent.
