Functionality in the application, transport, network, link and physical layers. Within the application layer, architecture and protocols for the Domain Name System, e-mail and World Wide Web (WWW) will be focused. Introduction to multimedia systems. Introduction to wireless and mobile networks.

Learning outcome

A. Knowledge:
1) A foundational understanding of the most fundamental concepts, principles and technologies underlying computer communication networks and services, including the overall architecture of the Internet, principles of network based services, principles of switching techniques, functionality and basic protocols of the five layers, and use of Transport Layer protocols in network application design.
2) A basic understanding of wireless and mobile networks.
3) A basic understanding of multimedia networking.

B. Skills:
1) To be able to communicate, reason and creatively think about the architectures, principles and technologies in the design and implementation of computer communication networks and services.
2) To be able to explain how and why the basic protocols of the five layers work.
3) To be able to communicate, reason and creatively think about wireless and mobile networks, and multimedia networking.
4) To be able to design and implement network applications using the existing Transport Layer protocols.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises and projects. Lectures and excercises are common to all students following the course. All students must complete a mandatory project in order to qualify for the final exam. For students following the Computer Technology and Communication Technology study programs, the project is common to several courses in this term. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
