Course content

- Study of the example system.
- Use of discrete event simulation (DES) and analytical methods for evaluating solutions and understand phenomena in ICT systems.
- Developing a DES model for a system
- Simulator development, validation,
- Data Analysis and evaluation of system properties.
- Use of ( simplified ) analytical models.
- Earnings Discussion.
- Documentation of methods and results.
- Presentation orally and in lab report.

Learning outcome

A. Knowledge:
- Methods for evaluating quality of service ( QoS), for instance depedability and performance, in communication systems.
- Get an understanding of the interrelation between the system design and the quality of the service the system delivers.

B. Skills:
- From a system description, choose the right level of abstraction for an QoS evaluation.
- Establish models as a basis for evaluation.
- Develop discrete event simulators, based on generic primitives .
- Using / developing simple analytical models.
- Using simulation, and theoretical tools and methods for studying the QoS, e.g., traffic and / or reliability, characteristics.

C. General competence:
- Present / report orally and in writing.
- Participate in technical discussions .
- Responsibility for planning and progress.

Learning methods and activities

Project-oriented work containing, inter alia, modelling, simulation, and analysis and presentation of results. Colloquia in which students will present papers and own results, and where challenges are discussed. Self-studies.

Three reports shall be handed in during the semester. These must be approved to receive an assessment in the topic. The assessment (100%) is based on a final report, which will in part be based on the reports made during the semester.

Compulsory assignments

  • Report 2
  • Report 3
  • Report 1

Specific conditions

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.
