About the course

Course content

This course is composed of two parts:

1. Drinking water treatment and water hygiene.

2. Wasterwater treatment and sludge handling.

The content of each of these two parts is the same as that of the specialization course themes of the same name (see also TVM4515). The course shall give theoretical and practical foundation for planning, design and operation of water and wastewater treatment plants. Within the area of drinking water treatment and water hygiene lectures are given on water quality standards, design and operation of unit processes used in drinking water treatment plants as well as systems design targeting different raw water qualities. Hygienic conditions in water sources, pipelines and receiving water are described as well as measures against hygienic water pollution and methods for surveillance. Emphasis is given to disinfection of water including inactivation efficiency and formation of disinfection biproducts. Within the area of wastewater treatment and sludge handling lectures are given concerning wastewater characteristics, effluent standards, design and operation on unit processes being used in wastewater treatment (mechanical, biological and chemical methods) as well as systems design targeting various effluent standards and receiving waters. Emphasis is given towards removal of nutrients from wastewater. Lectures are also given on design and operation of facilities for wastewater sludge treatment and handling, dewatering, stabilization, hygienization and thermal treatment as well as on final disposal and reuse of resources in sludge

Learning outcome

The course shall give competence in the area of drinking water and wastewater treatment for instance competence and skills in planning, functionality and design of water and wastewater treatment plants.

Learning methods and activities
