Course content

The course is meant to give a more thorough theoretical understanding of the various biological processes used in water and wastewater treatment and sludge management than what is given in the ordinary MSc-programme. A focus is given on biological processes and sludge management such as; design of different biological reactors, membrane bioreactors, methods to measure / monitor biological processes, sludge management (dewatering processes, hygienization processes, stabilisation processes and thermal processes). An emphasis will be made on in depth understanding of biological water treatment and sludge management and the application of this in research based projects.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
The candidate should have in-depth knowledge of biological processes for advanced water treatment, and sludge management. The candidate should be able to consider the application of this in research projects, and to contribute to the development of new theories and methods in the field.

Skills:
The candidate should master key biological processes for assessment and the use of relevant methods for advanced water treatment, and to apply these to specific needs. The candidate should be able to use these skills to perform research at a high international level. The candidate should be able to assess the work of others on the same level.

General competence:
The candidate should be able to use knowledge from the discipline for scientific assignments and projects, and to publish research results in recognized national and international channels.

Learning methods and activities

The course is divided in 5-6 concentrated seminars / colloquium if there are 3 or more students. If fewer, individual teaching will be offered. A report on a given topic shall be given, presented as a scientific journal paper and presented as an oral conference presentation for the water treatment research group at the department. To pass the course a score of at least 70 percent is required.
